What Are Termites and Can They Live in Wisconsin?
Termites are a small wood destroying organism that can cause extensive damage to a home. Wood Destroying Organisms or WDO's are pests that damage wood structures like homes, sheds, and other types of buildings made of wood. Other common WOD's are carpenter ants and wood boring beetles. Each WDO has tell tale signs of their presence. They can often be hard to observe even when an infestation occurs. Unless there are obvious signs of damage. They often go unnoticed by homeowners for years. One of the easiest ways to spot a termite problem is damage to wood and mud tubes that they build on the outside of wood in order to travel through. They are responsible for billions of dollars of damage in the United States annually.
There are several different species of termites that live in the United States. There is really only one known species that can thrive in Wisconsin. Termites are prevalent in warm climates but can live in colder climates as long as they can survive and not freeze during the winter. The southern portion of Wisconsin is susceptible to having termites. The northern part of the state is less prone to termites as it is normally colder in that part of Wisconsin. Termites that actually get to that area of the state often do not survive the winter and that is why they are rarely found in colder climates. Termites also need moist conditions to survive. Keeping uneccessary moisture away from buildings can help prevent termite problems.
The subterranean termite is the species present in southern Wisconsin. Termites live in the ground and travel to find wood. They are one of the only organisms that can actually eat and digest wood. Once in a building they have a much greater chance of survival through the winter due to the warmth a building can be provide. Treating and repairing termite or damage caused by other wood destroying organisms can be expensive and cost thousands of dollars. They are often difficult to treat once they are established. They can cause significant damage to structural portions of buildings. Treating termites involves specialized knowledge and equipment. It involves not only treating the area where termites are found, but also treating and preventing access tot he building. Because termites travel underground the equipment needed has to disperse the termite control products underground and at various areas around a home. This is why treating termite infestation is so expensive and requires experienced and trained technicians.
We include a termite/wood destroying organism inspection if desired on every home inspection for free. VA loans and some other government loan programs require a termite inspection and documentation be performed during the buying process to show no presence of termites or if they are located that they are properly treated and any damage is repaired prior to the purchase of a the house. This is particularly true in southeastern Wisconsin as termites can be found but it is not common. We can provide the necessary inspection and NPMA forms needed for these types of loans to clients so that they can purchase their home with as little hassle as possible.
